I just thought I would take a moment to address an oft-tapped issue of youth voting. Now I am considered a youth at the fresh age of 22. Over the last year or two I have become increasingly aware of the ignorance and unwillingness to even want to be aware, of my peers. My friends and co-workers, almost blatantly refuse to head dutifully down to the polling stations, refuse to give a damn about the future of our country, refuse to question whether the parties if today even have the next generation of Canada in mind or are they simply bending to the voter demographic. A simple fact; the majority of today's voters are baby-boomers, the recently retired, the old and grey. So all a wise political leader needs to do to sway the vote is toss a few keywords into his speech like: PENSION, HEALTHCARE, or another elderly cause, and bang, he's got the majority.
What about other important issues to young Canadians, mainly equal rights among minorities, Kyoto, the environment, they are tossed to the side come election time, save of course for the Green Party but even that is unrealistic. What we need is younger faces in the polling stations and younger faces in the whole political system. If only a small fraction of the youth today got off their collective ipod listening, xbox playing LAZY ASSES of the damn couch and get with it, then we can have a voice. This is the future of our lives, the very country we live in and if we don't want to have any say in it, than what the hell are we gonna have to deal with when the recently retired become the recently deceased?
A burned out healthcare system? a non existent CPP? A system so terribly inflated the crash down rivals that of Enron?
So seriously, so called leaders of our country, don't insult me by dragging a half known celebrity around, or trumpeting "hip" music at conventions, in thinking that this is gonna grab my vote. Try getting in touch with the future of the country, keeping an ear to the ground and actually create a platform that addresses the concerns of the young citizens, and maybe they will put their attentions to you.
